Izumi's Diary Page 74      Wednesday 20 March 2013

The Life of Bikes

Hello!

Here today is a slightly quizzical Izumi.

Sometimes you notice things that you have not noticed before and you wonder if you really have not seen them previously or they truly have very recently started to appear before your eyes.

Guide Bike

Olympus E-PL5 w 20mm, 1/60 sec, f/1.7, 3200 ISO, 40mm (eqiv)

I speak here of bicycles...

As you can imagine, where I live the two-wheeled population seems to be at least half the two-legged one, and I have captured happy photographs of many which I hope you have enjoyed in previous Diary pages.

But in my recent early walkings I have noticed a number of bicycles by themselves on the streets, in various poses.

Are they asleep, patiently awaiting their owners return or are they there for some reason known only to themselves?

Some of them are outside shops, some outside gyms, some by themselves in laneways and byways and one morning one was outside a church.

More Bikes...

Olympus E-PL1 w 12-50mm, 1/60 sec, f/5.1, 3200 ISO, 50mm (eqiv)

Some I found in places that befuddle even my mind as to the reason why.

A Bike with a View

Olympus E-PL1 w 75mm, 1/250 sec, f/22, 200 ISO, 150mm (eqiv)

And just once I came upon one taking its owners home. Is that what they're doing? Are they like guardian angels with wheels instead of wings?

They are there in fine weather and rainy weather but seem to disappear as the morning progresses. This would lend weight to the angels-with-spokes theory, wouldn't it?

This has been a bit of a mystery not quite completely revealing itself before my footsteps.

I can say for certain that there are a lot of bicycles early in the morning, as you yourselves have seen here, but by later in the morning they have all gone. But where?

I could stay on the streets and stake out one or two of them in traditional gumboot fashion like the famous Mr Sherlock Holmes or Mr Roger Carling or, probably closer to my heart, M Jules Maigret, but I think I prefer it to remain an urban mystery that my mind can mull over from time to time. There are not enough mysteries to wonder at in our age and I think we should cherish the ones that we have.

So there, like a dog (or bicycle) who is fast asleep, I shall let it lie.

Goodbye from your sleuthful flâneuse,

Izumi.
