Izumi's Diary Page 40     Tuesday 20 December 2011

In Which I Meet Myself

Hello! Here is Izumi.

And as I was walking the early morning streets after all the factory and mechanical and industrial visiting of the last few pages, I came upon something that was a bit of a surprise to me.

Awaiting the Decisive Moment by Hidari Kagetora

It wasn't that picture of a flâneuse above (could it be a fanciful impression of me?) with a folding camera on a tripod because as you know I hand-hold my PEN on the streets and use Man Friday when I am in interior locations where the light is lacking or I am using the big zoom lens to bring myself closer to the subjects. And I don't have a cat.

No, I was en flân one morning, wondering if the sun was going to appear or it was going to be a cloudy and dull day with no happy photographs forthcoming, when I looked into a shop window I was passing…

Here's Looking at Me

… and saw another flâneuse looking back at me.

I know you can buy doll figures of various anime characters but I have never seen one with a camera. Later when the shop was open I asked the man within about it and he said that he bought it several years ago in Hawaii. And no, it was not for sale so I can't have a little model of a flâneuse to keep company with my PEN when I am not out and about with him.

But the sun did appear and so happy photographs were able to be captured.

You can see that the sun was strong and early and low in the sky but high enough to shine down into the street and I was able to capture some nicely contrasty, colourful photographs to make up for the flat lighting that had greeted me before.

But then I met someone who is perhaps what my walking should be more about, even if there was no waiting or ambushing involved. By that I mean candid portraits of people on the street, going about their normal activities and not reacting to the flâneuse in their midst, even if the activity is reading the paper while waiting for the bus.

It felt good to be on the streets again and having to be aware of my surroundings and alert for any opportunities that presented themselves, even before they became realities so I would be ready for them with my PEN. I think the lioness in me which had been a bit asleep has become newly awake.

Thank you again for being with me.

Your friendly flâneuse,

Izumi.
