Izumi's Diary Page 34     Wednesday 28 September 2011

Hello!

Izumi is here again and this time I have had a think and a talk with myself and decided that it is time to take more photographs of people.

I had the feeling also to make them not so much candid on the streets (which can lead to long barren moments between happy photographs sometimes, as you know) but to be a bit more easy on myself (but not being a lazy-bones asleep in the grasses while the wildebeest graze by) and go to my friend's café and set myself a little project of photographing the people there as if I was being assigned such a job by Paris Match because M Cartier-Bresson was busy elsewheres and could not do it.

So you can see that the part of Izumi's brain that produces dreaming is still working well! But they could not be posed portraits because my friends there were working and I had to be quick of frame and focus to capture the essences of their morning activities.

But sometimes even though I try to keep my PEN as a subtle companion so people don't play-act in front of us, people who know he is there with me can take the opportunity to have themselves or their activities recorded so they can send prints to their friends and relatives. This I do not mind especially if they are my friends as well and even more especially if they have cafés and restaurants where I and my friends can have many wonderful and delicious meals together.

You will notice if you read the little writing under the photograph that I used a lot the new 45mm f/1.8 lens which I have not had for very long. I wanted to see what its talents were and I was also aware of it being best that I was a little bit of a distance away from my friends so that I did not interfere with their working habits.

You will also notice that I continued the likeness to a magazine's pages by processing some of the images in colour and some in black and white and some in between. This I enjoyed doing and trying out in Camera Raw the different possibilities before I decided what imparted the feeling of the particular photograph the best.

But sometimes deciding which ones to put in my Diary in colour and which ones in black & white was a difficult process.

Sometimes my friends couldn't help striking poses for me but I also managed to capture happy photographs of them at work being unconcerned with the camera, much as M Cartier-Bresson and Jeff Carter and I must now add Ms Vivian Maier found with their subjects.

I hope my Paris Match editor is happy with the photographs for this one-off issue.

I enjoyed taking them and will do more of such subjects whenever I can.

And before I go to have my cuppa, I must thank the people who let me photograph them at their work and I hope I didn't get in their ways too much. So thank you Mai and Lap and Tien and Anh and Nhi.

Goodbye and thank you again.

Your friend,

Izumi.
