After Sunset and Before Sunrise
         
     
 

Hello!

It is Izumi again but this time I am a little more late than usual so I hope you forgive me for that. But there is a reason.

I think there must be a drought of Decisive Moments even though there is not a drought of clouds and rain these mornings. Some of the mornings I have been walking but I do not see any photographs that appear before me. And I know, without being a boastful girl, that if there are photographs to be found it is I and my PEN who can find them.

But I am being faithful to my idea of taking one lens with me each morning so I can be disciplined by M Cartier-Bresson. I am sure that it is not this that is causing the shortage because I know that if I see a photograph that will also be there the next morning but is asking for a different lens from the one that my PEN is wearing that day, then I will put it on him the next day and capture the photograph for my satisfaction and to show you here.

And if a photograph is escaping because he is asking for a lens that I do not have with us and he will not be there tomorrow, or even in the next minute, then I will know that too – but it has not been the case.

And I must also remember that the strong early sunlight that was shining into the windows and giving me happy reflections is no longer there at my walking time. If I am to go walking at the same time as the light that I like then there will be a lot of people on the streets also going to their work places so the whole feeling of the streets that I had of just me and the camera and the happy photographs will be different. But I must think that this is a good thing to happen and be exploring it more fully like my street-walking ancestors would be. Perhaps I need to have two walking times with breakfast in between them.

And that is reminding myself of a book that I read when I was quite younger and learning English and being helped by my uncle who spoke English very well. It was about a bear who liked eating honey (he called it 'hunny' which is how I called it when writing for a long time and still do today with my friends as our joke) and thought that having breakfast and lunch and dinner and other little meals too in between were the best parts of the day. He was called Pooh Bear and I used to think he lived in a woods near my house with his friends, even though I knew he really lived in a woods far away over the seas in England, because I looked it up in a big book of maps that my uncle had.

And I tell you that I read the proper book, too, not the unfortunate one that Mr Disney produced that should be destroyed with all its copies. But Pooh wasn't looking for Decisive Moments like Izumi is here (but he did have a Scareful Moment when he almost caught a Heffalump, so I remember) so perhaps he could be allowed to do such things, whereas I have a Purpose and an Ambition for my Searchings.

And as a result of all these changes with light I have been walking around more in the evenings too.

You may think that I have already several happy photographs of the dress shop window and you are right that I have, but I also like this one because the earlier ones are not in the night like this one is. It is perhaps like the tree of Mr Ansel Adams in a different season and so can be photographed in a different mood, which because of the colours of the light and the night I give it the title that I have below.

But I go past this dress shop every morning on my walk to see my friend Noel who sells newspapers and we talk about many things that he is knowledgeable about and what is happening on the streets that I might be interested in.

  It is now here really becoming Autumn and there is much darkness in the mornings to keep my PEN's apertures open rather than closed. This means that I have to be extra careful when I use my fingers to select what it is that I want to be in focus. With my fast prime lenses, apart from the 20mm, I do not have auto focus and auto aperture to be like warm pillows that I can rest on while I think of other things before me.

And without telling any secrets, I leart from my friends in Japan that there may be more lenses like that soon. If you are reading my past Diaries you maybe can work out what I am saying but I will not be a tell-all girl until some things really happen and I have evidences that I can show you here of them. I do not want to become excited with you and then have a disappointment that it is not like you imagined it would be. But enough of my mouthing on that for now!

However, I can tell you that I am just now using Photoshop CS5 for processing my photographs. And I am using Noise Ninja especially on the early morning ones that my PEN shoots at 1000 or 1600 or 3200 ISO even though the lens is set on f/1.4 or f/1.7 and I am finding that it does a good job of reducing the noise in the photograph without losing the detail that is there too.
