Learning with the Eyes

Hello, here is Izumi again.

I have been hunting for the Decisive Moment these mornings early but mostly they have not been mornings for the sun to also appear so I return empty with pictures.

I think that I need to find the Decisive Moment as well as have Decisive Light so the two can come together to make happy photographs.

But one morning there was nice light from the rising sun so I captured:

Morning Wires

Pentax Optio W80, 1/500 sec, f/5.5, 125 ISO, 140mm (eqiv)

And wih a little more walking along the street I obtained:

Shadow Street I

Pentax Optio W80, 1/500 sec, f/4.2, 125 ISO, 28mm (eqiv)

I became happy because I thought I might have a Decisive Moment even though, being an honest girl, I have to admit that it is a happy-chance picture because I did not really see the photograph before taking it because of not being able to look through a viewfinder.

And also other photographs which may be also Moments I miss because the camera is slow to be ready to take a second photograph after putting the first one away on a card. I think I must find another camera more like M Cartier-Bresson's so I can be a speedy girl on the shutter.

So I look at this one and wonder to myself, can I call it a Moment? Maybe just to myself for now because I need to have more improvement before I can say out loud to people that I take Decisive Photographs.

But then I learnt something that I did not think of before but now I think I need to remember for the future.

When David saw me with the photograph above in Photoshop he said "Stop". I said "Why?" and he said "Pretend you are taking the photograph again but this time all is still and not moving so you have plenty of time and can look at the scene with a second pair of eyes and see if any other photograph, or even a better photograph is there as well".

So I looked and became very surprised and pleased with what I found.

Shadow Street II

Pentax Optio W80, 1/500 sec, f/4.2, 125 ISO, 28mm (eqiv), crop

Now Izumi is not an ego-girl, but must be allowed a little pleasure with herself as the second photograph can almost be in a book of M Cartier-Bresson or Mr Steiglitz or Mr Carter, do you think?

Well, maybe really not but Izumi is happy because all those early and cold times on the streets can be forgotten if she is coming home with a happy photograph like this one.

Now I must go and look at books of such photographs and think about them and learn many new things for next time.

Thank you for looking here,

Izumi.
